Neoprene is a synthetic rubber — technically foamed chloroprene. In bag manufacturing, it is almost always used as a three-layer laminate:
- Face layer: nylon jersey fabric, chosen for printability and color
- Core layer: foamed chloroprene, which provides insulation and cushioning
- Back layer: nylon jersey backing for a soft, finished interior
This sandwich structure is what makes neoprene different from plain fabric or plain foam. The foam core traps air and slows heat transfer, while the jersey layers make the sheet sewable, printable, and comfortable against the body.
Why Neoprene Fits Bag Applications
Insulation. The closed-cell foam core slows temperature exchange, which is why neoprene is a natural choice for cooler bags, bottle insulators, and can coozies.
Water resistance. Neoprene itself resists water. It is not the same as a fully waterproof dry bag construction, but it handles splashes, condensation, and everyday moisture well.
Cushioning. The foam absorbs impact, making neoprene a good fit for laptop sleeves and protective pouches.
